A MAIKO IN A PRIVATE TEA HOUSEKyoto: Meet the Geisha Maiko with Gion Walking Tour

Socks required; photos and video only during the performance and the photo session; not suitable for children under 10.
A MAIKO SHOW WITH PHOTOSKyoto: Meet-and-Greet, Maiko Show and Experience

Geiko and Maiko, Kyoto
Walk, Show, Dinner or Dance: How to Choose
Four ways to see Kyoto's geiko and maiko, what each one really delivers, and where the night walk fits.
There are four honest ways to see a geiko or maiko in Kyoto, and three of them can be booked: on stage at a maiko show, across the table at a maiko dinner, and at the public dances that Kyoto’s geisha districts stage in spring and autumn. The fourth, a glimpse on the street in Gion, is luck. The walk this page follows is built around that fourth way: TravelinGood’s Kyoto: Gion Magical Night Walking Tour & Geisha Culture, 1 hour 40 minutes through Gion at night from the Minamiza theatre, in a group of up to about 10, with a guide who explains the customs of the geisha world on Hanamikoji. It does not promise a sighting and it is not designed for meeting geisha. It was per person from $26 in current promotion (usually $28), checked November 2026, with 5,260 reviews and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
The short answer
If you want to watch a maiko dance and ask her questions, book a show or a dinner: it is the only way to be sure of it. If you want Gion itself, its tea houses, its rules and its lanes after dark, book the walk and treat a sighting as a bonus. If you are in Kyoto in April, in May or in the first ten days of November, add one of the public dances, the biggest stage of all, with tickets sold by the district itself.
Walk, show or dinner?
Kyoto: Gion Magical Night Walking Tour & Geisha Culture
TravelinGood: 1 hour 40 minutes from the Minamiza theatre, in a group of up to about 10: Hanamikoji and the customs of the geisha world, a matchmaking shrine, a pagoda lit at night and a photography service. A sighting is luck, not part of the plan.
Check dates →1-Hour Geisha Show (Performance, Q&A, Photos) in Kyoto
GuideMe Japan: two dances of about 5 minutes each by a maiko or a geiko, then questions, photos and a traditional game, with tea and snacks. In a Kyo-machiya tea house (up to 23 guests, with a session at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine) or a Gion theatre (up to 40).
See the maiko show →Kyoto: Sumo Entertainment Show with Chicken Hot Pot & Geisha
京都相撲部屋 at Kyoto Sumo Club: a dance by geisha in kimono, then a 2-hour sumo show with English commentary and a game with the geisha. Unlimited drinks in every plan; the chanko hot pot only in the meal plans. Not a formal tournament.
See the sumo show →Kyoto: Geisha Dinner & Gion Cultural Walk
Travel Japan Together: a Gion walk with a local host, then 2 hours with a geisha or maiko in a private tea house over a kaiseki dinner with unlimited sake, dances and parlour games. Free cancellation up to 7 days before.
See the dinner →Prices, ratings and review counts from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026). Operators price by date and season, so treat the figures as the shape of the market, not a quote.
The price follows the time you spend with a maiko, not the time on the clock. A walk with no performance is the cheapest evening; a show buys about ten minutes of dance and the rest of an hour for questions and photos; a dinner buys two hours at her table. Geisha show or Gion walk sets the two side by side, and what a geisha show costs in Kyoto prices every rung, from a 15-minute museum dance to a private dinner.
Where the Gion night walk goes

The walk starts in front of the Minamiza theatre, at the east end of the Shijo bridge near Gion-Shijo Station, and the start time on your booking is the time the group leaves. From the front of the Minamiza it is about 300 metres on foot to the Shijo-dori end of Hanamikoji, the main street of the geisha district, where the guide explains the rules and customs of the geiko and maiko world. Then come a shrine associated with matchmaking, a Buddhist pagoda lit at night and hidden pathways. The exact route is not published, so the map shows the landmarks of Gion rather than a line to follow.
Two details shape the evening. The group is small, up to about 10 people, so you can hear the guide in a narrow street. And a photography service is included. The route has stairs, so it does not suit wheelchairs, baby carriages or limited mobility; children under 6 need no ticket.
What the walk does not do
It does not take you to meet a geisha. You may see a geiko or maiko on her way to an appointment, and some evenings you will not. When one passes, the district’s own rules apply: the December 2023 message from the residents of southern Gionmachi, the Gion Kobu tea houses, the Gion Geiko Association, Kennin-ji and the Southern Gionmachi Council asks visitors not to stop, touch, follow or take unauthorised photos or videos of geiko and maiko, because “the geiko and maiko are not mascot characters”, and it asks guides to brief their guests. Gion photography rules has the full text and the signs on the private lanes.
A maiko on stage: the shows
A geisha show in Kyoto is short by design. In GuideMe Japan's 1-hour show the maiko or geiko dances twice, about 5 minutes each, and the rest of the hour is questions, photos and a game. The 45-minute show at the Kyoto Handicraft Center has two dances in 8 to 10 minutes, an interview and 10 to 15 minutes of photos with your own camera. In the afternoon, the Gion Kagai Art Museum stages a 15-minute Kyomai, two songs in the Inoue style, five times a day, with no photos during the dance. In the evening, Gion Corner, a small theatre on the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo block, plays at 18:00 and 19:00 for 5,500 yen an adult, with a kyomai dance among other traditional arts (its own page, read 3 November 2026).
Gion Corner or a maiko show explains what each kind of stage gives you.
Dinner with a maiko
A dinner is the one evening where the maiko’s time is yours: two hours or more in a tea house or a machiya, with her dance, conversation and parlour games, and a guide who translates. Travel Japan Together's geisha dinner and MagicalTrip's maiko dinner, for up to 7 guests, both start with a walk through Gion. Maiko dinner in Kyoto compares them with a private dinner and a dinner on a Noh stage.
The public dances, by month
Each of Kyoto’s five hanamachi, the geiko and maiko districts, stages its own dance once a year, with tickets sold by the district’s own troupe.
| Dance | District | Venue | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitano Odori | Kamishichiken | Kamishichiken, near Kitano Tenmangu | Usually late March to early April |
| Miyako Odori | Gion Kobu | Gion Kobu Kaburenjo | 1 to 30 April 2027, at 12:30, 14:30 and 16:30 |
| Kyo Odori | Miyagawa-cho | Miyagawacho Kaburenjo | Usually April |
| Kamogawa Odori | Pontocho | Pontocho Kaburenjo | May (5 to 22 May in 2026) |
| Five hanamachi together | All five | Minamiza theatre | Late June |
| Gion Odori | Gion Higashi | Gion Kaikan | 1 to 10 November, every year |
Miyako Odori tickets for April 2027 go on sale on 6 January 2027 at 10:00, from 8,000 yen with tea to 5,000 yen, and cannot be cancelled or refunded (Gion Kobu Kabukai, read 3 November 2026). Kyoto geisha dance seasons has the venues on a map and each troupe’s prices.
An evening in Gion
Gion Corner is about 480 metres on foot from the front of the Minamiza, so its 18:00 or 19:00 show and the night walk can share an evening when the walk’s start time on the calendar leaves room. Dinner in Gion, then the walk, is the other order. Either way, the walk is the part of the evening that explains what you are looking at.
Gion at Night, with Someone Who Knows Its Rules
A 1 h 40 min walk from the Minamiza theatre with a guide, in a group of up to about 10: Hanamikoji, a matchmaking shrine and a pagoda lit at night. A geiko or maiko may pass, but the walk does not promise it. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Starting from $26 per person in current promotion (usually $28).

Kyoto Geisha Show: Questions
Where you can really see geiko and maiko, the Gion night walk, show lengths and prices, the dance seasons, photos in Gion and children.
At a performance you book: Gion Corner's evening show, a maiko show, a maiko dinner, or one of the public dances the five hanamachi stage in spring and autumn. On the street in Gion a geiko or maiko may pass on her way to an appointment, but that is luck, and the residents' own message asks visitors not to stop, follow or photograph them without permission. See geisha show or Gion walk.
Perhaps, but it is not promised: the walk is not designed for meeting geisha. TravelinGood's Gion night walk covers Hanamikoji and the customs of the geisha world, a matchmaking shrine and a pagoda lit at night, and a sighting happens only if you are lucky. To watch a maiko dance, book a show such as GuideMe Japan's 1-hour geisha show.
The dancing itself is short: about 10 minutes in the 1-hour show, 8 to 10 minutes in the 45-minute show, about 15 minutes at the Gion Kagai Art Museum. The rest of the hour is questions, photos and games. Gion Corner's evening show is about 50 minutes by its English page and about an hour by its Japanese page; the spring and autumn dances run about an hour.
From about $25 for a 15-minute Kyomai at a museum to over $250 for a maiko dinner. The Gion Kagai Art Museum ticket was from $25 and the 1-hour maiko show from $62 per person, checked November 2026. Gion Corner charges 5,500 yen for an adult seat, and the Miyako Odori 2027 from 5,000 to 8,000 yen (both read on their own sites on 3 November 2026). See geisha show prices in Kyoto.
Geiko is Kyoto's own word for a geisha; a maiko is an apprentice. The Kyoto City Tourism Association glosses them as "geiko (regional term for geisha) or maiko (apprentice geisha)". Several shows name only 'a maiko or a geiko, depending on the day', so book for the performance, not for one or the other.
Not without permission. The December 2023 message from the residents of southern Gionmachi, the Gion Kobu tea houses, the Gion Geiko Association, Kennin-ji and the Southern Gionmachi Council asks visitors not to stop, touch, follow or take unauthorised photos or videos of geiko and maiko. Signs the council put on private lanes off Hanamikoji ban photos and entry there and ask 10,000 yen, a fine that, as the Asahi Shimbun reported, has no legal force. See Gion photography rules.
Yes: Gion Corner plays at 18:00 and 19:00 every day, except on its closed days and, from 1 December to 11 March, on Mondays, weekends and public holidays. Its programme includes a kyomai dance with tea ceremony, flower arrangement, koto, court music and dance, and kyogen. In the afternoon, the Gion Kagai Art Museum's Kyomai has five performance times between 13:30 and 16:30.
From 1 to 30 April 2027, three times a day at 12:30, 14:30 and 16:30, at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo. Tickets go on sale on 6 January 2027 at 10:00, from 8,000 yen with tea to 5,000 yen (3,000 yen for students), with no cancellation or refund (Gion Kobu Kabukai, read 3 November 2026). The other dances are on Kyoto geisha dance seasons.
In front of the Minamiza theatre, at the east end of the Shijo bridge near Gion-Shijo station. From there it is about 300 metres on foot to the Shijo-dori end of Hanamikoji. The start time on your booking is the time the group leaves.
On the Gion night walk, children under 6 need no ticket; it does not suit babies under 1, and there are stairs. Age limits differ by evening: the private tea house maiko meeting does not suit children under 10, MagicalTrip's maiko dinner children under 15, and the Gion Odori admits no one under 3.
Only in part: a dance by geisha in kimono opens it, and the rest of the two hours is sumo. The Kyoto Sumo Club show adds a game with the geisha, English commentary, unlimited drinks and, in the meal plans, a chanko hot pot buffet. It is entertainment, not a formal tournament.
