Gion Corner or a Maiko Show?
Gion Corner's evening sampler of traditional arts at 5,500 yen against a maiko show with questions and photos: times, length, prices and who each suits.
Gion Corner is a theatre sampler: from a seat in a small theatre you see a kyomai dance and short pieces of tea ceremony, flower arrangement, koto, court music and dance, and kyogen comedy, with bunraku puppets or noh depending on the season, every evening at 18:00 and 19:00 for 5,500 yen an adult. A maiko show is the opposite trade: one performer, about ten minutes of dance, then the rest of the hour to ask her questions and take photos. The show on this page is GuideMe Japan’s 1-Hour Geisha Show (Performance, Q&A, Photos) in Kyoto: a maiko or a geiko, depending on the day, two dances of about 5 minutes each, then questions, photos and a traditional game, with tea and Japanese snacks. It was per person from $62 in current promotion (usually $82), checked November 2026, with 715 reviews and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
The calendar above is the 1-hour show. It comes in two options that are different tours: the Tea House option in a Kyo-machiya, for up to 23 guests, which adds a 30-minute session with the maiko at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and is not wheelchair accessible, and the Gion Theater option in a show house, for up to 40, which is. Wear socks; bare feet, strollers and alcohol are not allowed.
Gion Corner: times, prices, closed days
Gion Corner plays twice an evening, at 18:00 and 19:00. From 1 December to 11 March it plays only on Tuesdays to Fridays, and not on public holidays. It is closed on 16 July, 16 August, from 26 December to 4 January, and on 11 and 23 February. An adult seat (23 and over) costs 5,500 yen, 3,850 yen from 16 to 22, 3,300 yen from 7 to 15; children under 7 go free unless they need a seat of their own. A premium seat is 6,600 yen and a seat with a tea ceremony 6,050 yen, at any age. These are the theatre’s own figures, read on its Japanese page on 3 November 2026; tickets are sold through its own site.
The show is about 50 minutes by its English page and about an hour by its Japanese page. Its English page adds that you can take a photo with a maiko after the show, while the Japanese page lists the photo under the winter programme, so check on the day. The theatre is the small hall of the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, at 570-2 Gionmachi Minamigawa, Higashiyama-ku, about 510 metres on foot from Keihan Gion-Shijo Station. gioncorner.com covers the programme, the seats and the evening there in depth.

The dance is short everywhere, and that is by design: the 1-hour show itself explains that performances are kept short to preserve the art, and that the maiko does not dance for the whole hour. What changes from show to show is what fills the rest of the time.

Choose a maiko show if the maiko herself is the point and you want to ask her about her life. Choose the museum if your evenings are taken and an afternoon is free.
